Online Quran Classes for Adult Beginners in the USA

A woman in a green hijab and headphones smiles as she starts an online Quran class for adult beginners at her desk, with city lights outside.

Quick answer: Adults can learn to read the Quran from scratch online. The usual path is Noorani Qaida first (letters, vowels, joining), then reading with Tajweed, then optional memorization. Live one-to-one 30-minute classes fit around work, and many adults read short surahs within months of steady practice. At Quran Specialist Online, USA plans are $35โ€“$70 a month, female teachers are available, lessons are taught in English, and there’s a 7-day free trial with no credit card required.

Who this is for

  • New Muslims (reverts) learning to read the Quran for the first time
  • Adults who grew up Muslim but never learned to read Arabic, or who’ve forgotten
  • Parents who want to keep up with their children’s lessons
  • Adults who read but want correct Tajweed

Whatever your starting point, feeling nervous or a little embarrassed is completely normal. One-to-one lessons are private and paced for you. There’s no class watching you, and no question is too basic.

The learning path

Step 1: Noorani Qaida (the foundation)

You’ll learn:

  • The Arabic letters and how each one sounds
  • Short and long vowels
  • How letters join together
  • Basic signs like sukoon and shaddah

Adults often move through the Qaida faster than children, because they can practice independently and understand the explanations. Read more about our Beginner Qaida course.

Step 2: Reading the Quran with Tajweed

Once you can read joined words, you’ll start reading from the Mushaf, often beginning with short surahs from Juz ‘Amma, and learn the main Tajweed rules: makharij (where letters come from), ghunnah, madd, and noon sakinah rules. See Learn Quran with Tajweed.

Step 3 (optional): Memorization or Arabic

Some adults go on to memorize surahs for salah or start a structured Hifz program. Others learn Arabic to understand what they read. See our Hifz and Arabic courses.

Fitting classes around work

Our lessons are live, one-to-one and 30 minutes on Zoom or MS Teams, so you can join from home, the office, or even a parked car on your lunch break. We schedule across Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific time:

  • Early mornings before work
  • Lunch breaks
  • Evenings after the kids are in bed
  • Weekends

Tell us your state and preferred times when you book your trial. If your schedule changes, you can switch plans.

Female teachers for women

Many women prefer a female teacher, and we have female teachers available. Just ask when you book.

A realistic weekly routine

  • 2โ€“3 classes a week (most adult beginners start here)
  • 10โ€“15 minutes of daily practice: repeat the lesson, read out loud, and listen to a recitation of the same page
  • One review session at the weekend

Short, daily practice works better than one long session a week.

What it costs

Classes a week Monthly price (USD)
2 $35
3 $48
4 $60
5 $70

Every lesson is a live one-to-one 30-minute class. You also get monthly written progress reports, and if the teacher match isn’t right, we’ll find you a new teacher.

Tips from adult learners’ experience

  1. Don’t skip the Qaida. Fixing letter sounds later is harder than learning them right the first time.
  2. Ask “why.” Adults learn faster when they understand the rule.
  3. Practice out loud. Silent reading doesn’t train pronunciation.
  4. Use headphones in class, so you can hear the teacher’s sounds clearly.
  5. Be patient with Arabic-only sounds like ุน, ุญ, ู‚ and ุถ. Everyone finds them hard at first.

What your first lesson looks like

Your trial lesson is relaxed and low-pressure. The teacher will:

  1. Ask about your goals, whether that’s reading for salah, reading the whole Quran, or helping your kids.
  2. Check your starting point. If you’ve never read Arabic, you’ll start with the first letters. If you’ve learned some before, the teacher will listen to you read a few lines.
  3. Teach a short first lesson, usually a handful of letters and their sounds, so you leave having learned something.
  4. Suggest a plan: how many classes a week, and what to practice before the next one.

Have a quiet space, a headset if you have one, and a notebook. If you’re learning alongside your kids, you’re welcome to sit in on their lessons too. Many parents pick up a lot that way.
