Quick answer: Compare academies on seven things: clear monthly prices, female teachers, a genuine free trial, a mainstream platform, written safeguarding rules, regular progress reports, and teachers with qualifications you can check. Take a free trial with two or three academies, ask the same questions each time, and choose the one that answers clearly and puts it in writing.
Who wrote this? This guide is written by Quran Specialist Online (QSO), an online Quran academy serving families in the UK and USA. We obviously have an interest. So we haven’t ranked academies, and we haven’t made claims about other providers’ prices or services. Instead, we give you the questions to ask any academy, including us, and show our own answers as one example to compare against.

Academy or individual teacher?
A private teacher can be excellent. An academy should add a structure around the teacher, including set prices, a cover teacher if one leaves, a manager who checks lessons, written policies and progress reports. When you compare academies, you’re judging that structure as well as the teacher. (If you’re mainly trying to judge one teacher for your child, see our guide on how to choose an online Quran teacher for kids.)
The 7-point checklist
1. Prices: clear, monthly, in your currency
Look for a published fee page that shows what you pay per month, how many classes that covers, and how long each class lasts. Be careful with prices that are only given “on request”, and with hourly rates that hide the lesson length.
Ask: How long is each class? Is the price per month or per lesson? Can I change plans? What’s the refund policy?
Compare fairly: work out the cost per minute of one-to-one teaching, not just the monthly total.
2. Female teachers
Many families want a female teacher for daughters, younger children or adult women. Check whether female teachers are actually available at the times you need, not just “on request”.
Ask: Is a female teacher available in my time zone, after school or at weekends?
3. A genuine free trial
A trial should let your child meet the actual teacher and have a real lesson. Find out how long the trial is and whether you need to give card details first.
Ask: How many trial lessons are there? Do I need to enter card details? Will the trial teacher be our regular teacher?
4. Platform
Mainstream platforms like Zoom or Microsoft Teams are familiar, work on most devices, and let parents see what’s happening. Be cautious about unfamiliar apps or private messaging channels between the teacher and your child.
Ask: Which platform do you use? Can I join from a second device? Are lessons ever recorded, and who keeps the recording?
5. Safeguarding
This matters most for children. A serious academy has written rules, and will tell you what they are without you having to push.
Ask:
- Can parents sit in on any lesson?
- Are lessons recorded, and only with parent permission?
- Does a manager check lessons?
- Who do I contact if I have a concern, and how quickly will they reply?
- Is there a published safeguarding page?
Don’t rely on vague badges or slogans. Ask what actually happens in practice.
6. Progress reports
Without regular reports, you only find out about problems months later. Look for written reports at set times that show what was covered, what needs work, and the next target.
Ask: How often are reports sent, and what’s in them? Can I see a sample?
7. Teacher qualifications you can check
Look for named teachers and specific qualifications such as Hifz-ul-Quran, a formal Tajweed course or an Alim course, plus years of teaching experience. “Highly qualified” on its own tells you nothing.
Ask: What exactly has my child’s teacher studied, and for how long? How many years have they taught children?
Also worth checking
- Teacher changes: if the match doesn’t work, will the academy find a new teacher?
- Course structure: is there a clear path, for example Qaida, then reading with Tajweed, then Hifz in defined stages?
- Registered business: can you find the company details?
- Reviews: read them on independent platforms as well as the academy’s own site.

How to run a fair comparison
- Shortlist two or three academies that publish prices and name their teachers.
- Book trials in the same week and at the same time of day, so your child is equally fresh each time.
- Sit in on every trial. Watch how mistakes are corrected. Is the teacher gentle and precise, and does your child read for most of the lesson?
- Ask the same seven questions and note the answers in the table.
- Ask for the policies in writing, including safeguarding, refunds and how plans can change.
- Decide on fit and clarity, not on price alone. A slightly dearer plan that your child sticks with is worth more than a cheap one they drop.
UK and USA differences
- Currency and billing: UK families should expect prices in pounds and US families in dollars. Be wary of conversions you have to work out yourself.
- Time zones: UK families need slots after school and at weekends in UK time. US families need slots across Eastern, Central and Pacific time (and Mountain time where relevant), so ask for times in your local time.
- Spelling and curriculum: it doesn’t matter much for Quran reading, but check the teacher’s spoken English suits your child.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the most important thing when choosing an online Quran academy? For children, safeguarding: parents can sit in, lessons are recorded only with permission, and a manager checks lessons. After that, the teacher’s qualifications and how well they get on with your child in the trial.
How much should online Quran classes cost? Prices vary by lesson length, number of classes and one-to-one or group teaching, so compare cost per minute of one-to-one time. As one example, QSO charges ยฃ30โยฃ60 a month in the UK and $35โ$70 a month in the USA for 2โ5 thirty-minute one-to-one classes a week.
Do I need to give card details for a free trial? Not always. Some academies, including QSO, offer a free trial without a card. If an academy asks for card details, check how to cancel before the first charge.
Can I get a female Quran teacher online? Many academies offer female teachers. Ask whether one is available at your preferred times, not just in principle.
Is Zoom or Microsoft Teams safe for children’s Quran lessons? Both are mainstream platforms that parents can watch. Safety depends more on the academy’s rules: parents can sit in, there’s no private messaging with the child, and lessons are only recorded with consent.
What if my child doesn’t get on with the teacher? Ask before you enrol. A good academy will find a new teacher without a penalty. At QSO, we find a new teacher if needed, and you can switch plans.
Should I choose an academy or a private teacher? A private teacher can work well. An academy adds cover, oversight, policies and reports. Compare both using the checklist above.
