Zoom or Microsoft Teams for Kids’ Quran Lessons: Setup and Safety

A mother in a hijab helps her son put on headphones before his online Quran lesson on a laptop with a webcam.

Quick answer: For a smooth and safe online Quran lesson, use a laptop or tablet (not a small phone) on a stable connection, with a headset, in a quiet shared room rather than a bedroom. Join through the official Zoom or Microsoft Teams link your academy sends, sit in whenever you like, and make sure lessons are recorded only with your permission. Both Zoom and Teams work well. What matters more is the set-up at home and the academy’s rules.

Written by Quran Specialist Online (QSO). Our lessons run on Zoom or MS Teams.

Zoom or Teams: which is better?

Both are mainstream, widely used platforms that run on laptops, tablets and phones. In practice:

  • Zoom is very familiar to many families and easy to join from a link.
  • Microsoft Teams suits households that already use it for school or work.

At QSO, families can use either. Choose the one your child finds easiest, and stick with it.

Step-by-step set-up

1. Choose the right device

  • Best: a laptop or tablet on a stand, so the screen is at eye level.
  • Fine: a large phone on a stand.
  • Avoid: holding a phone in the hand. It wobbles, and the teacher can’t see the child’s mouth clearly.

2. Get the sound right

Reading the Quran depends on hearing small differences in sound.

  • Use a headset or earphones with a microphone. This cuts echo and background noise.
  • Test the microphone before the first lesson.
  • Turn off TVs and keep siblings’ noise down during class.

3. Pick the right room

  • A shared family space such as the living room or kitchen table is best, so a parent is nearby.
  • Avoid bedrooms for children’s lessons.
  • Make sure there’s good light on your child’s face, and keep the window behind the screen rather than behind your child.

4. Check the connection

  • Sit close to the Wi-Fi router, or use a cable for a laptop.
  • Ask other people at home to pause large downloads or streaming during the lesson.

5. Install and update the app

  • Install Zoom or Teams from the official website or app store.
  • Update it before the first lesson.
  • Join with your child’s first name only, or the name the academy gives you.

6. Keep the Quran materials ready

  • Have the Qaida or Mushaf, a pencil and a notebook close by.
  • If the teacher shares their screen, make sure your child can see it clearly.

Safety rules every parent should know

Parents can sit in

At QSO, parents can sit in on any lesson. Please do, especially in the first few weeks. You’ll learn how the teacher corrects mistakes and how your child is getting on.

Recording only with permission

Lessons are only recorded with a parent’s permission. If you’d like a recording, for example to help with home practice, ask us.

Use the official link only

Join only through the meeting link sent by the academy. Teachers shouldn’t move lessons to other apps or private channels.

Keep contact through the parent

Arrangements such as scheduling, homework and feedback should go through the parent, not directly with the child on other platforms.

Manager checks

A QSO manager regularly checks lessons and teacher quality. If anything ever worries you, contact us straight away. See our safeguarding page.

Troubleshooting

Problem Quick fix
Echo or feedback Use a headset, and mute other devices in the room
Teacher can’t hear clearly Move closer to the microphone and check the right mic is selected
Video freezing Turn off video on other devices, move closer to the router, or turn off your own video briefly
Child distracted Move to a quieter spot, close other apps, and put a “lesson in progress” sign on the door
Can’t join Restart the app, check for updates, and contact us on WhatsApp

Making lessons enjoyable

  • Keep the same time each week, so lessons become part of the routine.
  • Have a glass of water ready and a toilet break beforehand.
  • Thirty minutes suits most children, because it’s long enough to make progress without tiring them out.
  • Praise effort and careful reading after the lesson.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zoom safe for children’s Quran lessons?
Zoom and Teams are mainstream platforms. Safety depends mostly on the set-up and the academy’s rules: lessons in a shared room, parents sitting in, official links only, and recording only with consent.

Can my child use a phone?
Yes, on a stand, though a tablet or laptop is better for seeing the Qaida or Mushaf.

Do we need a paid Zoom or Teams account?
No. Your child just joins with the link we send.

Will the teacher see our home?
Only what’s in camera view. You can use a plain background or a blur effect.

Can I watch every lesson?
Yes. Parents can sit in on any lesson.
