Online Quran Classes in Leicester for Adults, Reverts and Children

It’s not only children who want to learn the Quran.

Perhaps you never had the chance to learn properly as a child. Perhaps you’ve recently embraced Islam and are looking at the Arabic letters for the very first time. Or perhaps you’ve realised your child’s reading is about to overtake your own.

If any of that sounds like you, you’re in the right place. It’s never too late to start, and nobody here will make you feel behind.

For adults: start where you are

Adult learners often carry a little embarrassment. You might worry about reading slowly, mispronouncing a letter, or asking a question you think you “should” already know.

One-to-one lessons take that pressure away. It’s just you and a patient, qualified teacher on Zoom or MS Teams. Your teacher works at your level and your pace, and can go over a rule again as many times as you need.

Most adult beginners start with Noorani Qaida, which teaches the letters, how they join, and the vowel sounds. If you can already read, you can move on to Quran reading with Tajweed to make your recitation clear and correct.

For reverts: a gentle first step

If you’re new to Islam, learning to read the Quran can feel like a big task. It becomes much smaller when it’s broken down. First the letters. Then joining them. Then short words, then short verses.

Your teacher will keep things calm and clear, and you can ask anything. Sisters can choose to learn with a female Quran teacher.

For parents: learn alongside your children

There’s something special about a household where everyone is learning. Your child has their lesson; you have yours. Afterwards, you can practise together.

When more than one person in a family learns with us, you can get a family discount of up to 20%.

Children can start from around age 4 with short, gentle lessons. See our kids’ Quran classes, which also cover Islamic studies basics: wudu, Salah, the six kalmas, daily sunnah duas, ten surahs and Islamic manners. Girls can learn with a female tutor. Steady readers can later move on to Hifz.

A city with a growing Muslim community

In the 2021 Census, 86,443 people in Leicester described themselves as Muslim, around 23.5% of the city. Families here have plenty of options. What online lessons add is flexibility: one-to-one teaching at times that fit around work, school and family life, with no travel.

When can you learn?

Lessons are booked in UK time. We offer after-school, evening and weekend slots, and you choose the times that suit you. Our UK slots are adjusted for GMT and BST. The clocks go forward on the last Sunday in March and back on the last Sunday in October.

Each lesson lasts about 30 minutes, which is easy to fit in after work or once the children are settled.

Safe and transparent

Parents are welcome to sit in on their children’s lessons. Our safeguarding page explains how we keep lessons safe.

What to expect in your first few weeks

If you’re starting from the beginning, your first lessons will usually focus on the Arabic letters: how each one looks, and how it sounds. Some letters will feel familiar. Others are sounds that don’t exist in English, and those take a little practice.

After that, you’ll learn how letters change shape when they join, and how the short vowel marks change the sound. Bit by bit, letters become syllables, syllables become words, and words become short verses.

There’s no fixed deadline. Some adults move quickly, others prefer to take their time. What matters is that each step is solid before you move to the next.

Tips for practising between lessons

  • Little and often. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once a week.
  • Read out loud. Saying the sounds, even quietly, helps your mouth learn the shapes.
  • Write down your questions. Bring them to your next lesson. Your teacher would much rather answer a question than see you guess.
  • Be kind to yourself. Adults often expect to learn faster than children. Give yourself the same patience you’d give a child.
  • Practise with family. If your children are learning too, ask them to test you. They usually love it.

A note for reverts

If you’ve recently embraced Islam, you may feel there’s a lot to learn all at once: prayer, new words, new habits, and now a new script. Try not to carry all of it at once. Learning to read the Quran is one small step at a time, and your teacher is there to make each step manageable. Reciting even one short surah correctly for the first time is a moment worth looking forward to.
