Online Quran Classes in Houston: Help Your Child Read Correctly, Not Just Quickly

Here’s a worry that isn’t always easy to say out loud: “My child can read the Quran, but I’m not sure they’re reading it correctly.”

Maybe they race through the words. Maybe some letters sound the same when they shouldn’t. Maybe nobody has ever really stopped them to fix a mistake, so the same mistakes repeat every time they read.

The good news is that this is very fixable, especially when it’s caught early. It just needs a teacher who listens closely and corrects gently, one letter at a time.

Why Tajweed matters for kids

Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting the Quran correctly: how each letter is pronounced, where it comes from in the mouth, and how sounds change next to each other.

When children learn Tajweed early, it becomes natural. When they don’t, mistakes harden into habits that are much harder to undo later, especially if they go on to memorize.

Our Quran reading with Tajweed lessons are designed for exactly this. The teacher listens to your child read, stops them kindly when something’s wrong, explains why, and has them try again.

One-on-one makes the difference

At Quran Specialist Online, every class is live and one-on-one with a qualified teacher, on Zoom or MS Teams. For about 30 minutes, your child is the only student in the room.

That’s important for Tajweed. In a big group, a teacher simply can’t hear every letter from every child. One-on-one, nothing slips past.

Where would my child start?

During the free trial, the teacher listens to your child read and checks their level. Then they’ll suggest the right place to begin:

  • Still unsure of some letters or vowel sounds? A short refresher with Noorani Qaida can strengthen the foundations.
  • Reading, but with mistakes? Straight into Tajweed.
  • Reading well and ready for more? Hifz, with Tajweed checked as they memorize. Our Hifz guide for US kids explains how it works.

Younger children can also cover Islamic studies basics in our kids’ course: wudu, Salah, the six kalmas, daily sunnah duas, ten surahs and Islamic manners.

Class times in Central Time

Houston is in the Central Time zone. We schedule after-school, evening and weekend classes for Central Time families, so you can choose slots that work around school and activities.

Daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Around those dates, it’s a good idea to confirm your class time with us on WhatsApp.

Female teachers available

If you’d prefer a woman to teach your daughter, or you’re a sister looking for lessons yourself, female Quran teachers are available. Just mention it when you book.

Hear the difference for yourself

You’re welcome to sit in on your child’s lessons. For Tajweed, it’s often the quickest way to notice the change in how they read. Our safeguarding page explains how we keep classes safe.

Common mistakes a Tajweed teacher listens for

Every child is different, but some mistakes come up again and again. These are the kinds of things a teacher listens for during a one-on-one lesson:

  • Similar-sounding letters. For example, ร˜ยญ and ร™โ€ก, or ร˜ยน and ร˜ยก, sound alike to English-speaking ears, but they’re different letters and change the meaning of words.
  • Heavy and light letters. Letters like ร˜ยต and ร˜ยท are pronounced with a fuller, heavier sound than ร˜ยณ and ร˜ยช.
  • Elongation (madd). Some vowels are stretched for a set length. Rushing them, or stretching the wrong ones, is a very common habit.
  • Ghunnah. The nasal sound on letters like ร™โ€  and ร™โ€ฆ in certain positions is easy to skip when reading quickly.
  • Stopping and starting. Where a reader pauses can change how a verse sounds, so learning the stopping signs matters too.

You don’t need to know these rules yourself. That’s your child’s teacher’s job. But it helps to know that good Tajweed teaching is about these small details, heard and corrected one at a time.

Helping at home

Encourage your child to read a little each day, slowly rather than fast. If they can, have them read aloud to you the part they practiced in class. Speed comes naturally later; accuracy comes first.

A child who reads slowly and correctly is in a far better place than one who reads fast with mistakes. With regular one-on-one lessons, the accuracy comes first, and fluency follows.

What you need

  • A laptop, tablet or phone with Zoom or MS Teams (both free).
  • A reliable internet connection.
  • A quiet place to sit for about 30 minutes.

Headphones help your child hear the teacher’s recitation clearly, which matters when you’re working on Tajweed.

Questions families in Houston ask us

My child already reads the Quran. Do they still need Tajweed?

If they’re making mistakes in pronunciation or the rules of recitation, yes. Tajweed lessons correct those habits so your child reads clearly and correctly.

What time zone are classes in?

We schedule after-school, evening and weekend slots for Central Time families in Houston.

What does it cost?
