What is the Meaning of the Word “Quran”?

Considering the research of expert Islamic scholars, the word “Quran” Is derived from four basic root words. Let’s have a piece of quick information about these words.

1.Qara’a

It means “to collect or to compile”. This means that the Quran is collected and compiled by the divine revelations that angel Gibraeel (AS) brought to the Holy Prophet SAW.

Quran says that;

“It is for us to collect and recite it” (75:17)

2.Qar’ana

It means “union or conjunction”. However, Imam Sufyan Soori said that in the Quran, words are combined to make ayah, ayahs are joined to make Surah. And so on. Hence, the whole combination is so sensational and has a deep impact in every aspect.

Quran says;

“This is a book: it is guidance sure, without doubts” (2:2)

3.Qira’athun

It means “to read and recite”. Perhaps, recitation is a significant feature of the Quran. The Quran is recited daily, by millions of people worldwide. The recitation is called “Tilawat”.

    Moreover, it is a cultural, social, economical, and legal guide for every Muslim. Millions of people have learned and memorized the Quran. Nevertheless, it is a miracle

    4.Qira’in

    The word means “proof, evidence or symbol”. It means that the Quran is self-explanatory and self-evident. Some of the verses have general meanings. While some have specific meanings. Thus, it is a pretty blend of complete knowledge that applies to every single aspect of a human being.

    Quran says;

    “Oh, mankind! Verily there has come to you a convincing proof from your Lord for we have sent into you a light (that is manifest)”. (4:174)

    The History of Compilation of Quran

    The Quran revealed the last and the most beloved Prophet of Allah, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa SAW. It began to reveal itself during the blessed month of Ramadan. The year was 610 AD.

    It took 23 years for the complete revelation of the Quran. More than 40 scribes wrote the verses on materials like leaves, paper, cloth, leather, and bone fragments. The people of that time used to memorize the verses.

    The close companions of the Prophet helped to compile the Quran. Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar Ibn Khattab formed a delegation consisting of 12 leading scribes. Thus, they compiled the verses of the Quran in book form.

    In the Quran, there are 114 Surahs, 6236 verses, and 323,000 letters. After Hazrat Abu Bakr and Hazrat Umar, many of the Muslim leaders worked on the compilation and beautification of the Quran. So, it can become more appealing and fascinating for its reciters.

    The Islamic scholars have translated the Quran into many languages. Hence, it is even easier to understand it in your native language.

    The Quran is the beauty of Islam. It is a thorough compilation of the standards and virtues of the lifestyle of human beings. Many scholars have related the verses of the Quran to the modern world.

    Science nowadays has proven the facts of the universe which were revealed in the Quran more than 1400 years ago. This proves the significance of learning the Quran. However, a Muslim should always follow it anyway.
